The transformation is not on its way. It has already begun.
Excerpts from SOBIAM's founding manifesto.
“Teaching physicians to use AI is not enough. We must prepare them to think with AI.”
Medicine is facing one of the greatest transformations in its history. Artificial Intelligence has already reached medical offices, hospitals, universities and patients' lives. It is already part of how we study, research, diagnose, decide and care.
Medicine must decide whether it will simply watch this change or take a leading role in building its own future. That is why SOBIAM was founded. We are not creating just another institution to talk about technology. We are creating a space to consider the Medicine we want to build in an era in which physicians and machines will increasingly work together.
We believe Artificial Intelligence can expand our ability to understand diseases, anticipate risks, integrate information, support decisions and personalize care. But powerful technology, used without knowledge, critical thinking and responsibility, can accelerate errors just as quickly as it accelerates successes.
We must train professionals who can understand these technologies, question their answers, recognize their limits, identify bias, protect patient data and decide independently and responsibly when machines should be used and when human judgment should prevail.
Physicians must not be reduced to tool operators. The more powerful the technology, the more important the human ability to interpret, contextualize, decide and care becomes. AI can process information. Physicians understand people. That is where the future lies.
SOBIAM was founded to build that bridge. We want to bring together physicians, researchers, professors, students, scientists, technology professionals and everyone who believes that innovation in Medicine must go hand in hand with science, ethics and humanity.
We do not want Medicine dominated by technology. We want Medicine strengthened by technology. We do not want to replace physicians. We want physicians who are better prepared, more capable and freer to exercise what no machine can fully reproduce: clinical judgment, responsibility and human connection.
This is not just the time to learn a new technology. It is the time to build a new Medicine. And that Medicine starts now, with SOBIAM.
The question is no longer whether AI will be part of Medicine. It already is.
